What is PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE (PID)
IT IS A LEADING CAUSE OF INFERTILITY
This is a bacterial infection of the upper reproductive structures in women. These include the uterus, the fallopian tubes, the ovaries and surrounding support ligaments and peritoneum. This infection may disrupt the functioning of the fallopian tubes causing blockage and difficulties to get pregnant.
What cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
It occurs when bacteria infects the vagina and spreads upwards toward the upper reproductive structures. The most common bacteria is Neisseria gonorrhea and Chlamydia trachomatis. How ever it most often caused by more than one type of bacteria
Risk factors
Younger reproductive age group
Multiple sexual partners and non use of condoms
Invasive gynecological procedures like insertion of Intrauterine Device (IUD)
Poor menstrual hygiene. Use of dirty sanitary pads or keeping then in for too long.
